About our Program

UT Southwestern Medical Center is ranked as one of the top 15 urology programs (opens a new browser window) in the country. Our specialists are recognized as national leaders in the diagnosis and treatment of all types of urologic cancers, and the Simmons Cancer Center provides state-of-the-art facilities and patient care for people undergoing treatment.

Conditions We Treat

The Simmons Cancer Center urologic oncology team sees patients seeking medical guidance, treatment and support for cancers of the bladder, kidney, prostate, testis and penis. In recent years our urologic cancer researchers have identified the biomarkers that may pinpoint prostate cancer recurrence, as well as discovering that some hormonal dietary supplements may promote prostate cancer progression. Treatment Options

Simmons Cancer Center physicians were among the first in the country to use brachytherapy, laparoscopic surgery and radiofrequency ablation as the preferred methods for treating urologic cancers. They were the first to remove a cancerous kidney using the "single access keyhole" method, which involves a single incision through the umbilicus, or belly button. These minimally invasive procedures provide effective alternatives to traditional surgery and radiation, greatly reducing pain, risk, scarring and recovery time.

Brachytherapy treatment involves implanting tiny radiotherapy seeds about the size of a grain of rice that are able to destroy cancer cells, while leaving the rest of the body unharmed. Brachytherapy may be used in conjunction with radiation or in place of conventional radiation treatments.

Our physicians are also learning to work with daVinci, a groundbreaking robot that filters out tremor, enhances precision, offers three-dimensional imaging and eliminates the inverted manipulation of instruments usually required in laparoscopic procedures, all with a human at the controls. The technology and the physicians who use it are the most advanced in the field.

Simmons Cancer Center also offers clinical trials for the prevention and detection of prostate, kidney, bladder, testis and other urologic cancers. Patients who qualify for a study may be offered therapies that show particular promise years before they are available to the public.
