BOLD MRI for Head and Neck Cancers
To identify non-invasive MRI parameters which can be used to predict treatment response.
Minimally Invasive Procedures Help Preserve Quality of Life
About our Program
People fighting head and neck cancers know how their disease impacts daily life in ways that others often take for granted: speaking, swallowing, and even breathing. The disease can affect a person's self-image as well. Our patient care teams work hard to help you maintain your quality of life while the healing process is underway.
Conditions We Treat
At Simmons Cancer Center our challenge is not only to cure patients' cancer but also to restore or safeguard vital organs and functions. Our physicians work to preserve both life and quality of life, understanding patients' concerns about their appearance and facial symmetry.
Cancers of the head and neck include those affecting the lips, tongue, tonsil, palate, pharynx, larynx, sinuses, saliva glands and neck lymph nodes, as well as skin cancers on the face, scalp or neck, such as squamous cell carcinoma. Simmons Cancer Center also has a multi-disciplinary team of physicians who specialize in tumors at the skull base, focusing on the removal of tumors from the ear, brain and lateral skull base, as well as treating other skullbase disorders. Our team has extensive experience in the latest minimally-invasive techniques, which minimize complications and preserve normal neurologic and facial function.
Treatment Options
Our physicians have access to some of the most advanced diagnostic and treatment tools in the U.S. They frequently utilize magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and positron emission tomography (PET) to diagnose head and neck cancers and determine the best course of treatment. UT Southwestern's researchers and clinicians are nationally recognized leaders in the development and use of radiation therapies to precisely target head and neck tumors while sparing surrounding tissues.
Patients who qualify to participate in one of UT Southwestern's clinical trials may receive therapies years before they become available to the public. In addition, the clinical trials may provide superior therapeutic results with fewer side effects.
To learn more about cancers of the head and neck and their treatment, spend some time in our Cancer Information library, or find out about minimally invasive procedures in our section on Radiation Oncology. Should you have questions, be sure to talk with your physician or another member of your clinical care team.
