Complementing Cancer Care Specialties with State-of-the-Art Technologies
Vorinostat and radiation therapy for brain metastases
This study will investigate the safety, tolerability and spectrum of side effects of Vorinostat in combination with radiation therapy.
About our Program
UT Southwestern Medical Center’s radiation oncology service has a longstanding reputation for excellence in specialized care. Our mission is to provide the highest quality radiation treatment and to complement other cancer specialties in a multidisciplinary cancer-care setting. In 2004, our Moncrief Cancer Center was the first cancer center in Texas to treat patients with a TomoTherapy system utilizing image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT), which has become the standard of care worldwide.
Conditions We Treat
Our areas of expertise include:
- Tumors of the brain and spinal cord, and brain metastases
- Tumors of the breast
- Cancer of the gastrointestinal tract
- Cancers of the urinary tract, male genital organs and prostate
- Cancers of the female genital tract and urethra
- Cancers of the head and neck, including thyroid and skin
- Lymphoma, multiple myeloma, Kaposi's sarcoma, cancerous growth on the upper back, lower legs, head and neck, and soft tissue sarcoma
- Tumors, hematologic malignancies, and leukemia in children
- Cancers of the lung, thymus and esophagus
Treatment Options
Our physicians are experts in the use of a variety of state-of-the-art technologies to treat patients, both adults and children. Among these technologies are an Elektra Synergy linear accelerator and three Varian linear accelerators with Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) capability. These deliver a high dose of radiation more precisely through computer targeting, making it possible to spare the healthy tissue surrounding a tumor.
We also offer:
- Conventional 3D conformal radiotherapy
- Low- and high-dose rate brachytherapy
- Prostate seed implants
- Stereotactic radiosurgery and radiotherapy using the Accuray CyberKnife Robotic Radiosurgery System and the Gamma Knife system
- A dedicated computed tomography (CT) scanner and a large bore 4D CT scanner for precision treatment planning
- Combined treatment modalities
Simmons Cancer Center's clinical trials program gives patients access to treatments often unavailable at other health care facilities and years before they are offered to the public.
